The VCM's founders and current board members understand the challenges and difficulties faced by immigrants and refugees firsthand. The VCM's diverse Board of Directors plays a key role in recruiting additional collaboration with other organizations with which we have yet to work. As listed below, our Board now includes professionals from all walks of life.
The VCM is unique because the majority of the newly elected board members is the first wave of Vietnamese immigrants that have been raised and educated primarily in (America) Minnesota by our immigrant parents. This unique upbringing allows the VCM to bridge the traditional values from our elders and parents to the first generation children of Vietnamese descent who were born in the United States. The VCM mission is not necessarily focused on just one ethnic community, neighborhood, or religious or political philosophy. All ethnic Asians are welcome to participate, and the VCM is committed to inclusive and culturally-sensitive objectives.
Purpose:

The Board of Directors shall provide direction and govern the Vietnamese Community of Minnesota (VCM). The focus shall be on collaborations to assist and promote the vision and mission of VCM. The principal priority of the Board is to assist the delivery and evaluation of programs with its staff, committees, and collaborators.

Duties:
  1. Organize and carry out collaborations with working committees as determined through needs assessment and recommendations of existing committees.
  2. Receive, comment and act on monthly reports created by the Executive Director of VCM, standing committees and work groups.
  3. Monitor, review and set budget priorities for VCM based on recommendations of the Finance Committee.
  4. Hire the Coordinator of VCM based on recommendations of the Executive Committee.
  5. Make recommendations for programs and staff evaluations on a regular basis as mutually agreed upon with Executive Director and Executive Committee.
  6. Recommend the submission of applications for further funding and secure the in-kind match from collaborating agencies.
  7. Attend a minimum of two VCM events or activities per year and serve on at least one VCM Committee.
Policy of Attendance:

In order to promote the mission and vision of VCM, board members shall notify the Executive Director of all absences in writing at least twenty-four hours before each meeting, with the exceptions of emergencies. After three successive unexcused absences, the board position held by that person may be declared vacant.

Due to certain temporary conditions, which may keep a member from attending and fulfilling duties, any member may seek to be excused from Board duties by submitting a written request to the Board.
